Dr. Ellen Rowley presents a talk in association with Dublin Contemporary and IMMA as part of Culture Night

As the title describes, Ellen Rowley’s talk reflects upon the place and role of architecture in elements of contemporary Irish art practice. As an architectural historian engaged in history-writing through the joint sites of archive, lost and extant buildings, polemics and oral accounts, Ellen has been intrigued by the recurring motif of architecture in the work of many Irish artists today. The talk will range over sources and themes from photography and recording, unmade or vanished architecture, time and palimpsest. Ellen approaches her examples like an essayist, stringing together emblems rather than stitching up a narrative. Absence is suggested throughout and the premise of the talk is the relationship between architecture and history (as interpreted in recent art practice): in the words of architect/philosopher Dalibor Vesely, “history is not the past, but the depth of the present.”

This talk is free and open to the public, and is programmed in association with IMMA’s Education and Community Programmes.
