Manuel Ocampo’s paintings combine Catholic iconography with secular political narrative. His works draw upon a wide range of art historical references, contain cartoonish elements, and draw inspiration from punk subculture. Ocampo has participated in numerous international biennials, including Seville 2004; Venice (2003, 2001 and 1993); Berlin 2001;Lyon 2000; Gwangju 1997 and Documenta IX 1992. Other exhibitions include Jean-Michel Basquiat & Manuel Ocampo at the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle 1994; Helter Skelter: L.A. Art in the 1990s at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles 1992 and Individual Realities in the California Art Scene at the Sezon Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 1991.
