Living with the Panopticon: Acts of Non-compliance in the Digital World

A Conversation with artist Conor McGarrigle, Julianne Pierce from Blast Theory and Victoria Tillotson from iShed.

Followed by a discussion with respondents Teresa Dillon of Inventorium at the NDRC and John Buckley of Gradcam and IADT

Is privacy a concept no longer relevant in our digital world where pervasive digital devices enable tracking, surveillance and recording of almost all aspects of our lives? Living With the Panopticon  asks how the technology might be contested, shaped and reinvented in ways which enhance our everyday lives and examines the role of artists, designers and activists in creating non-compliance in today’s digital world.

Conor McGarrigle is a Dublin based new media artist and researcher working at the intersection of digital networks and real space. His work is concerned with the the integration of digital technologies into the everyday and the spatial implications of location aware mobile devices. His work is widely exhibited internationally, most recently in the 2011 Venice Biennale of Art and the Unrealised Projects touring exhibition. He is a Research Scholar at GradCAM and a PhD candidate at DIT Digital Media Centre, Aungier St.

Julianne Pierce is Executive Producer at Blast Theory. Originally from Australia, she is also a curator, writer and producer specialising in digital and media arts. Blast Theory is renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous artists’ groups using interactive media, creating groundbreaking new forms of performance and interactive art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting. Led by Matt Adams, Ju Row Farr and Nick Tandavanitj, the group’s work explores interactivity and the social and political aspects of technology.

Victoria Tillotson is a Producer at iShed, a part of Watershed in Bristol, where she delivers programmes such as Media Sandbox and artist residency opportunities. She has a background in visual art and a passion for games, technology and culture. Victoria is also based at Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed’s city-centre research studio that brings together artists, technologists and academics to explore the future of mobile and wireless media. 

John Buckley is a Dublin based artist, educator and Gradcam researcher examining the emergence of democratic political struggles within network cultures and online game spaces.

Teresa Dillon is Content and Events Manager for Inventorium and runs her own arts company, Polar Produce, through which she creates and produces various events, workshops and performances. She holds a PhD in psychology and has published on educational media, music technology and collaborative creativity.
